Concussion Baseline Testing

What is baseline testing?

Baseline testing is a multimodal assessment involving a series of tests in order to establish a normal level of function in the event that you have a concussion. It includes a wide array of tests including hand-eye coordination, reaction time testing, visual and vestibular testing, as well as a computerized neurocognitive test (ages 13+).

Who would benefit from having a baseline test?

Baseline testing is meant for healthy individuals who have a higher likelihood of having a concussion, most commonly due to participation in sports such as football, hockey, and soccer.

Why get a baseline test?

Unlike many other injuries, an absence of symptoms does not mean that you have fully recovered from a concussion. Ensuring that a full recovery has been made before returning to sport is imperative as receiving a second impact while still recovering from the first can lead to severe long term consequences. Baseline testing provides information about not just symptoms, but also reaction time, visual processing, balance, and many other tasks in order to obtain a firm understanding of your normal level of function and get a clearer picture for when a full recovery has been made. This allows us, in conjunction with your family doctor, to make the most well-informed decision for when it is safe to return to sport.

When is the best time to have baseline testing done?

You must not be suffering from a concussion or have any current concussion symptoms to receive a baseline test to ensure testing accuracy. For athletes, the most optimal time to have baseline testing done is just prior to the start of the playing season so that the test is as up to date as possible.
